SPRING IS IN THE AIR

FROM: THE SACRAMENTO CAT HOSPITAL

Winter will soon be behind us, and as the days grow warmer and the sun shines down, our gardens will burst into bloom.

Lovely as they are, many flowers are toxic to pets. Some flowers may cause severe illness. Others, sadly, can be deadly, and ingesting just a few petals, leaves, seeds, or parts of a bulb can be fatal.

One of the most toxic flowers for felines is the lily. If your kitty ingests even the smallest bit of a lily, or has even a slight exposure to pollen, leaves, or petals, it can cause significant changes in your kitty’s kidneys. This can lead to kidney disease or even complete kidney failure. It’s important to seek immediate veterinary care if you believe your kitty has had any contact with lilies.

Some of the other more common toxic plants include azalea, crocus, hyacinth, tulip, oleander, and daffodil bulbs. Pest balls, fertilizers, blood meal, bone meal, and insecticides can also cause illness or death. For a more complete list of plants that are toxic to cats, dogs, and horses, please click here.

If you suspect your kitty has ingested any of these plants, please contact us immediately. And please help prevent poisoning by ensuring that your pet does not have access to toxic plants.
